St. John XXIII Hospital Dialysis Unit

Welcome to the Dialysis Unit. Our dedicated team is committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for patients with kidney failure or severe kidney dysfunction. We specialize in peritoneal dialysis, offering a vital lifeline for those managing acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Notably, St.John XXIII Hospital-Aber is the only facility in Uganda that offers specialized peritoneal dialysis services, setting us apart as a leader in kidney care.

Peritoneal Dialysis Services

At St.John XXIII Hospital-Aber, our dialysis unit focuses exclusively on peritoneal dialysis, a treatment method that utilizes the patient’s peritoneum (a membrane in the abdomen) as a natural filter to cleanse the blood. This process involves the infusion and drainage of dialysis solution in the abdominal cavity, effectively removing waste products and excess fluids from the body.

How Peritoneal Dialysis Works

  • Dialysis Solution Infusion: A sterile solution is introduced into the abdominal cavity through a catheter.
  • Filtration Process: Waste products and excess fluids pass from the blood vessels in the peritoneum into the dialysis solution.
  • Solution Drainage: After a set dwell time, the used solution, now containing waste products, is drained from the abdomen and replaced with fresh solution.

Managing Acute and Chronic Kidney Injury

Our peritoneal dialysis program is designed to handle both acute and chronic kidney conditions:

  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI): Providing immediate dialysis support to patients with sudden kidney failure, helping to stabilize their condition and support recovery.
  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): Offering long-term dialysis solutions to manage kidney function and improve quality of life for patients with ongoing kidney issues.

Comprehensive Patient Support

At St.John XXIII Hospital-Aber, we believe in holistic care that addresses not just the physical, but also the emotional and educational needs of our patients. Our services include:

  • Patient Education: Teaching patients and their families about peritoneal dialysis, how it works, and what to expect. We provide training on how to perform dialysis at home, ensuring patients feel confident and empowered.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Offering dietary advice tailored to dialysis patients to help manage their condition and improve treatment outcomes.
  • Psychological Support: Providing counseling services to help patients cope with the emotional aspects of long-term dialysis treatment.

Home Peritoneal Dialysis

We support patients who wish to perform dialysis in the comfort of their own homes. Our program includes:

  • Training and Support: Educating patients and their caregivers on the home dialysis process, including setup, procedure, and hygiene practices.
  • Remote Monitoring: Utilizing telemedicine and other technologies to monitor patients remotely, providing ongoing support and adjustments to treatment plans.
