Postnatal Unit – St. John XXIII Hospital-Aber

Overview

The Postnatal Unit, an integral part of our Outpatient Department dedicated to providing comprehensive care for mothers and their babies during the critical post-delivery period. Our services are designed to ensure the health and well-being of both mother and child, with routine check-ups scheduled at six days, six weeks, and six months after birth. Importantly, all services offered by the Postnatal Unit are completely free of charge.

Six-Day Postnatal Check: At six days post-delivery, our focus is on early detection of potential health issues for both the mother and baby:

  • General Examination: We conduct a thorough examination to identify any danger signs in both mother and baby after delivery.
  • Check for Abnormalities: Our team checks for any abnormalities not identified during delivery, such as extra digits or tongue-tie.
  • Uterine Involution: We monitor the involution of the uterus to ensure it is returning to its pre-pregnancy size.
  • Episiotomy Site Check: We examine the episiotomy site to ensure proper healing.
  • Bleeding Check: We assess for signs of secondary postpartum hemorrhage to prevent complications.

Six-Week and Six-Month Postnatal Checks: At six weeks and six months, we continue to monitor the health of both mother and baby with the following services:

  • HIV Retesting: We retest mothers for HIV to eliminate the risk of mother-to-child transmission after birth.
  • Health Education: We provide comprehensive health education on the importance of immunization and nutrition for the baby.
  • Routine Health Examinations: Regular health checks are performed to ensure the continued well-being of both mother and child.
